In casting production, wax molds, sand cores, sand molds, etc. need to be made through wax pressing molds and core box molds, and the production process has a long cycle, high cost, and complex steps from mold design to processing and manufacturing. A slight mistake can lead to complete rework. Especially for some castings with complex shapes, such as engine cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, manifolds, etc., the manufacturing process of their molds is extremely complex, the development cycle is long, the research and development cost is high, and they cannot meet the requirements of quickly responding to the market. And 3D printing additive manufacturing technology precisely meets the requirements of rapid manufacturing of automotive engines. The combination of laser sintering and traditional casting can quickly achieve the transformation from design to product, reduce intermediate links, accelerate the speed of product launch, save development costs, and shorten the research and development cycle.
3D printing additive manufacturing technology can provide investment molds and resin sand cores (molds). Through traditional casting processes, nearly net shaped product blanks can be produced, and qualified products can be obtained through necessary machining. The combination of 3D printing technology and casting process has formed the process route of rapid casting, which has been proven to be a very effective means to solve the research and production of single or small batch complex parts. This rapid solution is particularly suitable for A-sample trial production of automotive engine and other components.
Figure 1 Comparison of Process Flow between Rapid Casting and Traditional Casting
The process flow of rapid casting is shown in Figure 1. There are two ways to achieve rapid casting using selective laser sintering: one is to directly sinter thermosetting resin sand for casting with laser, and obtain castings through sand casting; The disappearing wax mold can be directly sintered by laser, and castings can be obtained through precision casting technology. The common feature of these two methods is the omission of mold manufacturing. Therefore, if used for single piece or small batch production, the production cycle will be greatly shortened.
