Aluminum foil production adopts rolling technology, which is influenced by many factors such as the quality of rolling oil, the surface condition of rolling rolls, process operation technology, and production site environment. Aluminum foil, especially thin aluminum foil, inevitably has various defects, and pinholes are one of the main ones. The size and quantity of pinholes are important scales for measuring the quality level of aluminum foil products. It is precisely because of the presence of pinholes that the permeation of oxygen, water vapor, and other substances through aluminum foil is not zero. The size and quantity of pinholes in aluminum foil have a decisive impact on the moisture resistance, gas barrier, and light shielding properties of aluminum foil and its composite materials.

The needle hole degree index is a particularly critical indicator for detecting medicinal aluminum foil. Due to the limitations of domestic production processes, many production units in China are unable to effectively limit the "pinhole number" of medicinal aluminum foil, which is mainly manifested in poor stability and frequent occurrences of exceeding the pinhole number or larger pinhole aperture. However, it should be noted that if there are too many pinholes or the diameter is too large, it will directly affect the airtightness of the drug packaging, leading to deterioration of the drug and endangering human health.

The national standard YBB00152002-2015 specifies the pinhole degree of medicinal aluminum foil

Take 10 samples with a length of 400mm and a width of 250mm (when the width is less than 250mm, take the roll width), and place them one by one on a pinhole inspection table (800mmx600mmx300mm or an appropriate volume wooden box, with a 30W fluorescent lamp installed inside the wooden box, and a glass plate placed on top of the wooden box. The glass plate is lined with black paper and has a space of 400mmx250mm to inspect the pinholes of the sample). Check the pinholes in the dark, and there should be no dense, continuous, or periodic pinholes: there should be no pinholes with a diameter greater than 0.3mm per square meter: the number of pinholes with a diameter of 0.1-0.3mm should not exceed one.
