Open Path Optical Extinction Analysts (OEAs) can accurately measure the optical extinction coefficient and visibility in the air. By combining the measurement of open-loop cavity decay with a reference scheme, OEAs can measure the optical extinction coefficient caused by environmental aerosols with higher accuracy, less sample processing, and almost no drift.

Research and Development Background:
Extinction coefficient and visibility are key parameters for air quality characteristics and aerosol research. Usually, these data are estimated through a set of scattering data assumptions about aerosol size, shape, and albedo. Even worse, the instruments currently available on the market tend to exclude larger volume particles (i.e. humidified aerosols) when extracting aerosol samples, which underestimates the extinction coefficient and visibility.

How to achieve it?
NikiraThe cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS) technique is used to directly measure the absolute optical losses of aerosols using first principles. In addition, the open circuit optical cavity design ensures no extraction loss in air sampling. Therefore, the instrument can measure the real environmental optical extinction coefficient and visibility without ignoring larger aerosol particles. The solution from Nikira Laboratory utilizes patented technology from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States, which enables periodic self calibration and drift correction without the need for standard gases, enabling long-term on-site monitoring.
The instrument can store data continuously for more than 2 years internally, and can be accessed through USB or cellular modem, powered by battery or AC electricity.
