Municipal landfills are one of the largest sources of methane (CH4) in the United States.
Due to the decomposition of urban solid waste (food residues, yard trimmings, paper materials), it is estimated to account for 14.3% of the total CH ₄ emissions.
According to estimates from the US Environmental Protection Agency, landfills emitted a total of 3.7 million metric tons of CH4 in 2021, equivalent to approximately 295 million metric tons of greenhouse gas/GHG (carbon dioxide equivalent or CO ₂ e tons).
This is equivalent to the greenhouse gas pollution from 66 million gas powered passenger cars on the roads within a year (about 1/4 of all cars, SUVs, trucks, and pickups in the United States)
This is also equivalent to the greenhouse gas pollution of 79 coal-fired power plants.
