KGM two-dimensional encoder is used to dynamically detect the contour machining accuracy of CNC machine tools. For example, it can be used for arc subdivision testing, supporting arc radii from 115 mm to 0.1 mm and a feed rate of up to 80 m/min. KGM can perform two axis freeform testing. The advantage of KGM is non-contact measurement, which avoids the influence of ball bearings like DBB.

Measurement system and signal processing
KGM consists of a two-dimensional lattice grating in the shape of a circular crystal fixed on a base and a scanning head. During measurement, the scanning head moves non-contact on the grid plate. For the setting operation, fix the base on the workpiece clamping element (such as the worktable of the machining center) and align it. The scanning head is fixed on a stationary clamping element (such as the spindle of a machining center) and roughly aligned. Use a diaphragm to set the scanning gap to 0.5 ± 0.05 mm. Use a set of screws on the scanning head to finely adjust the gap and improve the measurement signal quality with the help of ACCOM signal processing software.

For two perpendicular axes, KGM outputs two 90 ° phase difference and 4 µ m signal period signals. Measure the signal and send it to the computer for further processing. Heidenhain's EIB 741 connection box (Ethernet) and IK 220 counter card (PCI bus) are used to connect KGM with computers. Both devices are capable of subdividing sine measurement signals by 4096 times, resulting in a measurement step size of approximately 1 nm per axis. Heidenhain's ACCOM software processes measurement values based on the ISO 230-4 standard. Using ACCOM makes it easy to program KGM for arc subdivision testing and freeform testing. The ACCOM signal processing software prompts the user to input all necessary parameter information and generate the corresponding NC program. The generated program can be immediately loaded into the CNC numerical control system through a communication interface (serial port, Ethernet, or TCP/IP).
