In September 2025, the first International Symposium on the Application of AI in Nuclear Energy was successfully held in Shanghai. 18 experts from the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD, the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China National Nuclear Equipment Technology, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Dassault Systemes, Famatoon, Westinghouse Electric and other units shared cutting-edge achievements, and more than 200 domestic and foreign representatives attended, providing a footnote to the cross-border dialogue between AI and nuclear energy.
One year later, this conversation will escalate again.
The Second International Symposium on the Application of AI in Nuclear Energy will be held from October 14th to 16th, 2026 at the Shanghai Hongqiao Kaiyuan Mingdu Hotel. This conference is hosted by the China Nuclear Energy Industry Association and co organized by the 719th Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and Dassault Systemes (Shanghai) Information Technology Co., Ltd. Its aim is to deepen international exchanges and experience sharing, promote standard coordination and ecological co construction, and assist in the intelligent, safe, and sustainable development of the nuclear energy industry.
A main forum,
See the global picture of AI+nuclear energy
At the main forum on the afternoon of October 14th, representatives from international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD/NEA), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the Korea Atomic Energy Industry Association (KAIF), the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom), and the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Industry Development Association will appear in turn. From the application of AI in the field of nuclear safety to the intelligent research and development design of nuclear fusion devices, from EPRI's global initiative to the intelligent practice of South Korean nuclear power technology, in half a day, a global map of AI empowering nuclear energy slowly unfolded.
Domestic forces are also making intensive appearances. The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment will bring the "Nuclear Embankment" intelligent review system to demonstrate how AI can build a strong nuclear safety defense line; China Fusion Energy Co., Ltd. shares the application of artificial intelligence technology in the research and design of fusion devices; Dassault Systemes depicts a new paradigm for the nuclear power industry around "industrial AI+digital twin".
Full day thematic exchanges,
From R&D design to production operation and maintenance
On October 15th, the conference entered the AI practical experience exchange segment for the entire lifecycle of nuclear energy, with two main topics.
Topic 1 focuses on "AI Empowering Nuclear Power Research and Design". Westinghouse Electric, Framatome, China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute, Tsinghua University Institute of Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology, Eighth Institute of Nuclear Industry, China General Nuclear Power Research Institute, East China Electric Power Design Institute and other units will successively give speeches, covering the application of nuclear engineering AI, bidirectional empowerment of uranium hydrogen zirconium lead bismuth microreactors, innovative practices of nuclear power data centers, research and development of AI4S empowered reactors, and artificial intelligence technology for conventional islands in nuclear power plants.
Topic 2 shifts to "Nuclear Power Production, Operation and Maintenance, and AI Applications in the Industry Chain". Nuclear Power Operation Research (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., China National Nuclear Corporation, Huaneng Nuclear Power, CGN Digital Technology, China Academy of Geological Sciences, and China National Energy Daduhe Big Data Service Co., Ltd. will share cases of intelligent agent applications, intelligent control of generator sets, 5T integrated operation and maintenance, rare earth mineral exploration, and AI practices in the field of hydropower.
The roundtable discussion in the afternoon set three realistic topics: how to build a high-quality dataset for the nuclear energy industry? How to create a 'Chinese standard' for AI reliability verification? How to identify high-value AI application scenarios? These issues are precisely the thresholds that AI must cross from being "usable" to being "user-friendly".
Technical visit+Industry Expo,
Seeing the landing scene
On the morning of October 16th, participants will visit Zhangjiang in three routes:
robotGu and Shanghai Superconducting Technology, Shanghai Kaiquan Pump Industry, and Shanghai Electric Steam Turbine Factory - Nuclear Electroformed Forging Hot Processing Base. From robots to superconducting materials, from pump manufacturing to nuclear power equipment, the combination of AI and the nuclear energy industry chain has a concrete observation window.
From IAEA to EPRI, from nuclear fusion to microreactors, from research and development design to frontline operations, this conference attempts to answer how AI can better empower the high-quality development of nuclear energy. See you in Shanghai in October.
