Calculation method of inductance saturation current

Firstly, we need to know the saturation magnetic induction intensity Bs of the inductor core material (saturation magnetic induction intensity refers to the magnetic induction intensity value when the material reaches saturation) and the cross-sectional area A of the inductor core (the cross-sectional area of the core).


However, we need to determine the effective number of turns N of the inductor coil (i.e. the number of conductor turns in the coil that are truly coupled to the magnetic field, usually the total number of turns minus the number of turns that cannot be coupled due to stacking effects or lead wires), as well as the length L. of the inductor coil


The formula for calculating saturation current is as follows:

Isat=Bs x A x N/L

Among them, Isat represents the saturation current of the inductor.

It should be noted that the above formula is only applicable to ideal inductor design. In practical situations, due to the coupling effect between the inductor core and coil, as well as the characteristics of the inductor coil, there may be some errors in the calculation of saturation current. In addition, the design of inductor cores and coils is also influenced by many other factors, such as the magnetic permeability of the core material, temperature effects, and so on.
