HP Labs announced today the invention of a new accelerometer with a sensitivity 1000 times higher than existing mass-produced products.

This sensor is part of HP's CeNSE (Central Nervous System for the Earth) research program, mainly used to establish a personality monitoring network, measure and track changes in various things around the world.

The ubiquitous sensors will be able to detect changes in the ecosystem, make recommendations for the prevention and treatment of AIDS, reduce the speed of energy use, improve energy utilization, monitor earthquakes and detect underground oil reserves.

These sensors are also quite cheap and can be mass-produced. It is currently unclear whether they will appear in future consumer electronics products, but the company envisions that these sensors can first be used to handle traffic congestion, monitor weather and road conditions.
