Danfoss VLT FCD300 frequency converter delivers luggage to millions of passengers at Singapore airport
Date: 2008-03-22Read: 10

Singapore Airport has over 20 million passengers entering and exiting the country each year, and the airport uses Danfoss VLT FCD300 frequency converters to control luggage transportation at the airport. Denmark's Saarland Danfoss GmbH will provide approximately 5500 VLT FCD300 frequency converters to FKI Logistics, a global supplier of baggage handling and conveying systems.
Anyone who has had waiting experience at the airport will almost certainly think of the logistics system for handling and transporting luggage at the airport. If an airport only needs to handle a few planes and one baggage claim point, then anyone can make it operate. And we all know that the actual situation at airports is different: hundreds of planes depart and arrive every day, and luggage needs to be transported to different terminals or picked up from different terminals. The most important thing is that there are thousands of passengers waiting for their luggage every hour, and it must be accurate luggage. Within a few minutes of their arrival at the luggage hall, it will appear on the rotating conveyor belt. This is enough to turn most passengers' hair white. Therefore, FKI Logistics is facing very strict requirements, and Singapore Changi Airport is no exception. The time from the moment the plane is parked to the moment the luggage arrives at the baggage claim hall cannot exceed 35 minutes. This includes the full allowable time for unloading luggage from the aircraft, transporting, categorizing, and transferring it to the correct luggage carousel using an 'airport taxi'.

64 million passengers annually
The number of passengers is expected to increase in the coming years. Therefore, in 2007, Singapore Changi Airport will expand a new Terminal 3 with the capacity to handle 20 million passengers, bringing the total number of passengers entering and leaving the airport to 64 million per year. Only the new Terminal 3 at Singapore Changi Airport will require the installation of a ten kilometer long luggage handling system.
FKI Logistics Company
FKI Logistics is a subsidiary of FKI Material Processing and Conveying Group, a publicly listed company, under the brand names CrisplantTM and ClecoTM. FKI Logistics is a market for baggage handling and transportation, parcel and cargo distribution, warehousing, and self-service systems, headquartered in the UK, with approximately 15000 employees worldwide. FKI Logistics has established over 600 Crisplant systems, among which no two systems are identical. More than 50 systems are installed at airports, including Hong Kong Airport, London Airport, Las Vegas Airport, Munich Airport, and Shanghai Airport.
Unit based design
In a short period of time, it is possible to construct a large-scale system like this, as the entire system is composed of units. FKI Logistics' conveying system, called CrisBagTM, will also be shipped according to the model, which is already very suitable for Singapore Changi Airport. The system requirement here is to be able to transport and sort luggage weighing up to 100 kilograms, moving at a speed of 1.8 to 7 meters per second, that is, reaching 25 kilometers per hour. Each conveyor line must be able to transport 2700 pieces of luggage per hour, or up to 270 tons of luggage per hour for 24 hours a day.
Small train
Each individual piece of luggage is placed on a rack, and each rack has a specific code. Therefore, you can always know where the luggage rack is coming from and where it is going. In this way, all luggage that passes through the system can be tracked. The carriage rolls forward like a small train, adjusting its speed based on real-time position and direction, as well as other transportation situations within the system. After Zui, this' train 'will arrive at the exact platform, which is the rotating conveyor for luggage retrieval at the airport.
Accurate requirements for frequency converters
The control of the speed and start stop of the conveying system has put forward requirements for the frequency converter. Therefore, FKI logistics company needs to find a frequency converter supplier that can meet their needs and meet all the requirements for this special function. As a fundamental requirement, the baggage handling and handling system must be able to operate continuously, quickly, and effectively. FKI Logistics chose Danfoss' VLT FCD300 frequency converter precisely because it meets all their requirements. The entire system of this device includes over 5500 CrisBagTM units, all of which must be equipped with one or more frequency converters. This requires a high degree of operational reliability.
Danfoss's breakthrough
This task is undoubtedly a breakthrough for the application of Danfoss frequency converters in the luggage conveying industry, but obtaining an order does not mean that anyone can rest or slack off. The arduous work has just begun.
At the beginning, they first worked on the testing system set up by FKI Logistics in Aarhus, Denmark. This testing system is large enough to serve a small airport, consisting of approximately 300 CrisBagTM units, each equipped with a Danfoss VLT FCD300 frequency converter.
Each CrisBagTM unit that may be used in the baggage handling system at Changi Airport in Singapore will be set up and tested. This means that each expected function and power must be tested and run before mass production of CrisBagTM units can proceed.
During the testing phase, there is a need for very close cooperation between FKI Logistics and Denmark's Saarland Danfoss. To this end, weekly project meetings are held, and technical personnel and engineers work closely together throughout the entire project phase. The installation of the entire system at Changi Airport in Singapore was scheduled for 2007.
service
In principle, submitting a frequency converter is very simple, and there are about 250 suppliers who can do it. However, there are very few manufacturers who can provide services and support at the same time.
Danfoss has representatives providing services and support in over a hundred countries. In addition, service centers have been established and spare parts are available worldwide, so spare parts can now be sent from anywhere in the world within 24 hours. Danfoss has also made great efforts to maintain a well-trained team of service engineers among employees and external business partners. This means that Danfoss employees, no matter where they may be in the world, can always have an understanding of the products.
So, at Changi Airport in Singapore, Danfoss is also within reach, just take a taxi. Therefore, in case of any unexpected issues, technical service personnel can arrive at the airport within a few hours.
VLT FCD300 frequency converter
The design purpose of the FCD300 distributed VLT frequency converter is to be able to control both standard motors and special-purpose motors. An FCD300 frequency converter can be installed on top of or near the motor. Of course, the FCD300 frequency converter is also equipped with both digital and analog input and output channels. If the FCD300 frequency converter is paired with a Profibus communication card, it can perform simple functions such as starting, stopping, and speed adjustment, as is the case at Singapore Changi Airport. And it can also collect various types of operational data, whether it is for overall management using the SRO system or selectively collecting data for maintenance purposes (such as startup and shutdown times or operating time). Zui, but not unimportant, the input and output channels of the FCD300 inverter can be used as "process inputs/outputs".
One of the advantages of distributed frequency converters is that they can save a lot of cables, as power cables between several FCD300 frequency converters can be ignored. In a system configured with so many frequency converters, * one item means saving thousands of meters of cables, not to mention saving installation cable time. Especially when installing VLT FCD300 frequency converter, there is another advantage in terms of maintenance, as all electronic components are arranged in the cover plate. Therefore, if or when the frequency converter malfunctions and has been used for many years, there will definitely be a fault message read out in the menu. Simply loosen the 6 screws, remove the cover plate, and install a new one, and it will run smoothly again. Especially in airports, downtime is a very important parameter.
The VLT FCD300 frequency converter also has an advantage, as it has a built-in safety switch. It can also provide a 'sensor socket', which can be easily connected to sensors or similar devices. In this way, as a remote input/output module, the frequency converter has an additional function, such as being able to access the bus through Profibus.
The output power of VLT FCD300 frequency converter can reach 3kW, and it can also provide IP66 casing. The enamel casing is very sturdy and can even withstand the very strong cleaning agents used in the food industry.
