What are the precautions when using a high shear homogenizer
Date: 2025-10-30Read: 0
The high shear homogenizer achieves material refinement, mixing, and homogenization through the shear force between the high-speed rotating rotor and stator, and is widely used in industries such as food, chemical, and pharmaceutical. To ensure the safe operation of the equipment, extend its service life, and ensure product quality, the following precautions should be taken during use:

1、 Preparation before operation

  1. Equipment inspection
    • Appearance and ConnectionCheck whether the equipment casing, pipelines, and valves are damaged or leaking, and ensure that all connection parts (such as feed ports, discharge ports, and cooling water interfaces) are securely fastened without looseness.
    • Electrical safetyConfirm that the power supply voltage is consistent with the equipment label, and that the grounding wire is reliably connected to avoid the risk of leakage.
    • lubrication systemCheck the lubricating oil level of bearings, gearboxes, and other parts, and replenish it promptly if it is insufficient to ensure good lubrication.
    • cooling systemIf the equipment is equipped with a cooling device (such as water cooling or air cooling), check whether the cooling water flow or fan operation is normal to prevent overheating.
  2. Material adaptability
    • Viscosity and temperatureConfirm that the viscosity of the material is within the allowable range of the equipment (usually ≤ 10000cP), and the temperature does not exceed the upper limit of the equipment's temperature resistance (such as food grade equipment generally ≤ 80 ℃).
    • particle sizeAvoid large particles or hard impurities from entering the equipment to prevent damage to the rotor, stator, or blockage of pipelines.
    • corrosiveIf the material is corrosive, corrosion-resistant materials (such as stainless steel 316L) or coating treatment should be selected, and the cleaning cycle should be shortened.
  3. Parameter Settings
    • Speed and pressureAdjust the rotor speed (usually 500-15000rpm) and homogenization pressure (such as 10-200bar) according to the characteristics of the material to avoid equipment overload or material overheating caused by excessive pressure.
    • time controlSetting a reasonable homogenization time may lead to an increase in material temperature or excessive shear damage to the structure (such as protein denaturation) if it is too long.

2、 Monitoring during operation

  1. temperature control
    • Real time monitoring of equipment surface temperature (especially bearings and motor parts) and material temperature. If it exceeds the safe range (such as bearing temperature>80 ℃), immediately stop the machine for inspection.
    • For heat sensitive materials such as dairy products and biologics, a cooling system or segmented homogenization is required to control the temperature.
  2. Vibration and noise
    • During normal operation, the equipment should be stable and free of abnormal vibrations. If there is severe vibration or sharp noise, it may be due to rotor imbalance, bearing damage, or material blockage, and the machine should be stopped immediately for troubleshooting.
  3. Flow and pressure
    • Maintain a stable feed flow rate to avoid fluctuations in homogenization efficiency or equipment idling caused by fluctuations in size.
    • Monitor the discharge pressure. If there is a sudden drop in pressure, it may be due to pipeline leakage or pump failure, and it needs to be dealt with in a timely manner.
  4. Current and load
    • Observe whether the motor current is within the rated range. Overloading operation can accelerate equipment wear and even burn out the motor.

3、 Shutdown and cleaning

  1. Shutdown sequence
    • First, close the feed valve, wait for all materials in the equipment to be discharged before stopping the rotor, and finally turn off the power and cooling system.
    • Avoid sudden shutdown that may cause material sedimentation or sudden pressure changes inside the equipment.
  2. Cleaning and disinfection
    • Instant cleaningImmediately rinse the interior of the equipment with clean water or specialized cleaning agents after use to prevent material residue from solidifying and blocking the pipeline.
    • deep cleaningRegularly disassemble vulnerable parts such as rotors and stators, use a soft bristled brush or ultrasonic cleaning machine to remove stubborn stains, and avoid scratching with hard objects such as steel wire balls.
    • disinfection treatmentThe food or pharmaceutical industry requires 75% ethanol circulation disinfection to ensure aseptic production.
  3. Drying and Storage
    • After cleaning, dry the inside of the equipment with compressed air to avoid residual moisture that may cause corrosion or bacterial growth.
    • When not in use for a long time, place the equipment in a dry and ventilated place, and store the rotor and stator properly after applying anti rust oil.

4、 Maintenance and upkeep

  1. Regular maintenance
    • Replacement of vulnerable partsAccording to the frequency of use, check the wear of components such as rotors, stators, and seals every 3-6 months and replace them in a timely manner.
    • Bearing maintenanceReplace the lubricating oil every 500-1000 hours, check the bearing clearance, and adjust or replace it if necessary.
    • Electrical inspectionCheck the insulation performance of the motor and the fastening of the wiring terminals every six months to prevent aging or loosening.
  2. Lubrication management
    • Select lubricating oil of the specified model for the equipment (such as food grade grease) to avoid mixing and reducing performance.
    • When lubricating, pay attention to the appropriate amount of oil. Excessive oil may lead to poor heat dissipation, while insufficient oil may accelerate wear.
  3. safety protection
    • Wear protective goggles and gloves during operation to avoid material splashing and injury.
    • Set up protective barriers or warning signs around the equipment to prevent unrelated personnel from touching rotating parts.
