SMC rodless cylinder telescopic direction detailed explanation: how to distinguish between extension and retraction
1、 Basic principles and directional definitions of SMC rodless cylinder expansion and contraction
1. Structure determines direction
The expansion and contraction of SMC rodless cylinders are determined by the direction of piston rod movement:
-Extension: The piston rod moves outward from the cylinder body (working stroke), at which point the rodless chamber is inflated and the rodless chamber is vented.
-Retraction: The piston rod is retracted into the cylinder body (reset stroke), with the rod chamber inflated and the rod chamber deflated.
Rodless cylinders (such as SMC CJ2B series) rely solely on spring reset, with air pressure pushing for extension and spring force driving for retraction.
2. Pressure value: The extension usually requires 0.2-0.7MPa (ISO 15552 standard), and the retraction pressure can be reduced by 20% -30%.
-Travel speed: The extension speed is controlled by the intake flow rate (such as a speed of about 500mm/s when the regulating valve opening is 50%), and the retraction speed is faster (due to the small volume of the rod chamber).
2、 5 practical differentiation methods (with operation steps attached)
1. Observe the position of the piston rod
-Extended state: The piston rod is exposed (such as a cylinder with a stroke of 100mm, and the distance between the rod end and the cylinder body is ≥ 100mm).
-Retracted state: The piston rod only exposes the end connector (such as the rod end distance from the cylinder body ≤ 10mm).
2. Check the air circuit connection
-Extend corresponding interface: usually a rodless cavity port (marked as "A" or "P").
-Retract corresponding interface: there is a rod cavity port (marked as "B" or "R").
The cylinder needs to switch the direction of the air source, and for single acting cylinders, the position of the spring needs to be confirmed.
3. Listen to sound and measure time
-When extended: Due to the heavy load, the exhaust sound is muffled (taking a long time, such as 1.5 seconds to complete the stroke).
-When retracted: The exhaust sound is crisp (the time is relatively short, such as completing the stroke in 0.8 seconds).
4. Use sensors for detection
-Installation position of magnetic switch: the signal for retraction is near the cylinder head, and the signal for extension is near the rod end (sensing distance ± 2mm).
5. SMC rodless cylinder installation surface.
-Retract and pull the load closer to the installation surface (such as when the fixture is closed).
Judging by angle encoder (such as 90 ° for extension and 0 ° for retraction).
4、 SMC rodless cylinder telescopic control
1. Speed regulation: Limit the flow rate through a throttle valve (with a recommended opening of 60% for extension and 40% for retraction).
2. Buffer setting: Install a buffer pad at the end (extend the buffer stroke by 10% -15%, retract by 5% -8%).
3. Maintenance suggestion: Check the wear of the piston rod sealing ring every month (with a standard lifespan of 2 million cycles).
1、 The movement of the SMC rodless cylinder piston is driven by compressed air, and the extension (forward) and retraction (backward) are achieved by controlling the direction of the air path. Its core components include piston rods, cylinder barrels, seals, and solenoid valves. When compressed air enters from one end, it pushes the piston to move towards the other end; On the contrary, when the gas source is switched to the other side, the piston moves in the opposite direction. For example, the working pressure of ISO 15552 standard cylinders is usually 0.1~1.0 MPa. If the pressure is too low, it may cause insufficient thrust, and if it is too high, it may damage the sealing ring (refer to the Pneumatic System Design Manual).
2、 Extension steps of SMC rodless cylinder piston (taking single acting cylinder as an example)
1. Air source preparation: Ensure that the compressed air pressure is stable at 0.4~0.6 MPa (common industrial standards).
2. The SMC rodless cylinder switches to the intake passage, and compressed air enters the rodless chamber of the cylinder.
3. Piston motion: Air pressure pushes the piston rod outward until it reaches the end of its stroke.
4. Position locking: Some cylinders are equipped with mechanical brakes or magnetic switches to ensure that they stop when in place.
3、 Retraction steps of SMC rodless cylinder piston
1. SMC rodless cylinder power-off/reversing: The gas path switches to the exhaust state, and the rodless chamber gas is discharged through the valve body.
2. Use the spring force to retract the piston (the spring return force should be ≥ 0.3 MPa).
Compressed air enters from the rod chamber and drives the piston to move in the opposite direction.
3. Endpoint buffer: Some cylinders are equipped with hydraulic buffers to reduce the impact noise during retraction.
4、 Extended Applications and Precautions
1. Speed regulation: Control the intake/exhaust flow rate through a throttle valve and adjust the piston movement speed (recommended range is 50-500 mm/s).
2. Maintenance points: Regularly check the wear of the seals (replace them every 2 million cycles) and lubricate the guide rings.
3. Troubleshooting: If the piston is stuck, check the cleanliness of the air source (particles ≤ 5 μ m) or whether the piston rod is bent.
