How to integrate automation into garbage classification
Date: 2019-07-08Read: 42

Since the issuance of the "Notice on Comprehensive Implementation of Household Waste Classification in Cities at and above the Prefecture Level Nationwide" in June, garbage classification has gradually entered a mandatory era from point rewards. Shanghai has started mandatory garbage classification in July, and various residential areas have started to renovate garbage collection stations. Some small areas even distribute garbage classification bins to each household. In order to promote the cultivation of habits and green development, everyone in society has taken action together to improve the living environment.

Garbage sorting may seem like a small matter, but it's actually quite significant. How can we do it well? How should the classified garbage of the masses be handled? This is something we deserve to know.

Hazardous waste: It will be turned into harmless waste by waste treatment plants.

Recyclable materials: will be distributed to qualified recycling and processing enterprises.

Wet garbage: The generated biogas can generate electricity.

Dry garbage: Comprehensive utilization of incineration residues.

The United States is a major producer of waste, with poor waste sorting and recycling practices. Trump drinks 12 cans of cola a day, resulting in 12 cans of cola waste. On July 3rd, The Guardian reported that a new analysis by risk consulting firm Verisk Maplecroft shows that the United States, which accounts for only 4% of the population, generates 12% of urban solid waste, while China and India, which account for over 36% of the world's population, generate 27% of solid waste. The recycling rate in the United States is also much lower than other developed countries, making it the only developed country that generates more waste than its recycling capacity.

Before 2018, developed countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia had been sending their unclassified waste to China for a long time, relying on manual sorting by low-income Chinese people.

Automation technology ultimately serves society, and product quality is a necessary condition for reliability.

Let's take a look at how automation is integrated into waste treatment plants:

Wet Waste Treatment Plant: Yangpu District Wet Waste Resource Utilization and Disposal Center

The transport vehicle will dump all the garbage into a huge raw material pool, and the gripper of the garbage crane will lift and drain the garbage raw materials, and place them on the chain plate machine. The chain plate machine will transport the garbage to the crusher for bag breaking treatment. The garbage will be screened along the conveyor belt, and the screened wet garbage will undergo fermentation. The remaining screened plastic bags, metal objects, etc. will be loaded onto trucks and transported away.

Dry garbage treatment plant: Laogang Waste Treatment Park

The park has a waste incineration plant and a landfill site, which undertake the dry waste treatment of most of the urban areas in Shanghai. Shanghai generates over 20000 tons of household waste per day, while incineration plants process only 3000 tons of waste per day. Through the recycling of renewable energy, the annual power generation exceeds 300 million kilowatt hours. Any excess dry waste will be landfilled, occupying a large amount of land resources, and it will take over a hundred years to restore the land. The leachate and smoke generated during the incineration process of garbage will be further treated, and the water vapor will drive the generator to generate electricity. The incineration residue will be comprehensively utilized, most of which will be made into road bricks.

The transported garbage is first poured into the raw material pool and crushed, drained, and other operations are carried out by an 8-ton gripper crane. Sometimes the garbage needs to be drained for a week because the lower the moisture content in the garbage, the better.

During the incineration process, garbage needs to go through a series of procedures such as grabbing, mixing, stacking, feeding, and weighing before entering the incinerator to complete the entire process flow. All of these tasks require a garbage crane to complete, so the control of the garbage crane is particularly important throughout the entire garbage power generation process.

Before incineration, the garbage needs to be compressed into blocks, and the dual synchronous oil cylinder on the garbage compressor needs to have accurate height every time.

Garbage incineration is the process of reducing the volume of garbage through appropriate thermal decomposition, combustion, melting, and other reactions at high temperatures, resulting in residue or molten solid material. Garbage incineration facilities must be equipped with smoke treatment facilities to prevent heavy metals, organic pollutants, etc. from being discharged into the environmental medium again. Recycling the heat generated by garbage incineration can achieve the goal of waste resource utilization. Garbage incineration is an ancient traditional method of treating garbage. Due to its ability to reduce waste, save land, eliminate various pathogens, and transform toxic and harmful substances into harmless ones, incineration has become one of the main methods for urban garbage treatment. Modern garbage incinerators are equipped with good smoke and dust purification devices to reduce air pollution.

So how to choose a value encoder in harsh environments?

Waterproof and dustproof protection level IP level

The leachate and flue gas from incineration treatment plants are highly corrosive, and in such harsh environments, the protection level of the encoder housing must be above IP65.

The IP protection level standard is a standard and requires third-party certification recognized by the standard organization. For example, the encoder of Shanghai Jingpu Electromechanical is tested and certified by TUV Rheinland Laboratory in Germany.

The enclosure protection level is IP67. The protection level of the shaft is IP65.

Secondly, the level of resistance to vibration and impact

The garbage gripper crane has a daily processing capacity of 8 tons and needs to complete this task every day. Under such high intensity requirements, the anti vibration and impact rating of the encoder also needs to meet the standard.

Thirdly, the working temperature range and level

The heat of garbage incineration can be imagined, and the encoder needs to be able to withstand long-term operation under high temperatures.

Working temperature range test refers to the normal operation of power supply at this high or low temperature limit, such as when the encoder shaft changes and the data output changes normally.

Storage temperature testing does not require power on. At this extreme temperature, there is no irreversible quality change in the internal components.

The working temperature range of electronic products also reflects the basis for quality control in the supply chain of electronic components, including component failure rate control.

For example, compared to the temperature range of 60 degrees, 70 degrees, and up to 80 degrees, there is a significant difference in the damage rate after long-term use and extensive use in various scenarios, which can be statistically analyzed.

Fourthly, it is resistant to lightning induction and various electrical interferences

For the electrical characteristics of the encoder, the corresponding standard is the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standard, which requires third-party certification, such as certification from TUV Rheinland Laboratory in Germany. The testing items, such as electrostatic shock and fast pulse group shock, decompose lightning induction into various physical characteristics for encoder experimental testing.

Fifth, a quality management system and full lifecycle services for traceable encoder products.

The working environment of garbage treatment plants is complex, with high social responsibility and high requirements for the reliability of automated control performance. Carelessness is not allowed, otherwise the consequences of social responsibility will be serious. Manufacturers providing automated control systems and products must have a comprehensive quality management system guarantee and third-party quality management certification.

To get back to the point, starting from July 1st, after the official implementation of the new Shanghai Municipal Solid Waste Management Regulations, the difficulty of garbage classification has not yet exceeded people's daily cognitive scope. However, when people really stand at the fork in the road between dry and wet garbage, many people will still be confused for a while.

For example, melon seeds are dry, but they do wet garbage; Wet wipes are wet, but they are dry garbage. The paper used to wrap dog poop is dry, and the poop needs to be taken home and poured into the toilet. Similarly, pig bones belong to dry garbage, while chicken bones belong to wet garbage;

This mysterious classification method is related to the final processing steps of wet garbage. After arriving at the garbage treatment plant, wet garbage will be first crushed by a semi wet material crusher, while hard kitchen waste such as shells and pig bones, which belong to dry garbage, will clog the blades of the crusher. Similarly, dry Zongzi leaves and corn husks are also difficult to cut, even winding the blade to reduce the efficiency of pulverization. In addition, this kind of garbage will not easily rot and dissolve when thrown into the fermentation tank.

In short, there are two destinations for garbage: harmless disposal and reuse.
